Building a keyboard

A custom mechanical keyboard is made of a few parts that have to fit together:

  • Case / frame: the body. Barebones kits also include the PCB, plate and stabilizers.
  • PCB: the circuit board. Hot-swap PCBs let you push switches in without soldering.
  • Switches: linear (smooth), tactile (a bump) or clicky (a bump and a click). You need one per key.
  • Stabilizers: keep long keys like space and shift from wobbling.
  • Keycaps: make sure the set covers your layout.
  • Foam and cable: optional extras for sound and style.

The builder walks through each step, hides parts that won't fit, works out how many switches your layout needs, and warns about things like soldering or parts your kit already includes.

Custom parts

Can't find a part? Use Custom part in the builder to add anything with a name, price and link. Custom parts are saved in your browser and included when you share your build.
